New Delhi's Municipal Corporation (MCD) has implemented strict measures to address industries operating in "non-conforming areas". During a recent crackdown, 84 complexes were sealed and electricity and water supply were cut off from seven locations. Non-conforming industrial areas are those where industries are operating without proper zoning. There are 26 such areas in Delhi, with approximately 70% of the land being used for industrial purposes. Some examples of these non-conforming areas include Khyala, Peeragarhi, Mundka, Hastsal, and Anand Parbat. The Delhi government is working on redeveloping some of these areas to boost the city's economy, create jobs, and support industrial units.
In August and September, MCD teams inspected 520 units in non-conforming areas to ensure compliance with regulations. Licensing officers also examined 215 factories in conforming areas, resulting in the discovery of 43 unlicensed factories. After receiving notices, 31 factories applied for licenses, while MCD initiated the process of disconnecting power and water supply to the remaining units that did not respond within the specified timeframe. Additionally, a campaign has been launched to verify the status of units relocated from residential to industrial areas following the MC Mehta vs Union of India case.
